Digital Twin technology is by no means a new concept, and in fact, the first recorded use of a digital twin being deployed was by NASA, which started experimenting with the technology in the 1960s. During the early phases of space exploration, NASA needed to be able to simulate the working conditions of spacecraft, which could not be examined in-person, and hence made models for the Apollo 13 mission to help troubleshoot operational issues. Digital Twins have evolved considerably since then and are now used mainly by large engineering firms to create virtual replicas of large and expensive industrial assets such as engines and turbines. Doing so has led to large productivity gains in areas such as product development and maintenance in industries such as manufacturing and energy.【抄訳】デジタルツインは決して新しい概念ではなく、1960年代にNASAがこれを使用した実験を行ったことが最初とされる。宇宙探査の初期段階では直接調査を行うことができないため、宇宙船の動作をシミュレートする必要がある。そこでNASAはアポロ13ミッションのモデルを作成して、オペレーション上の課題解決に活用した。その後、デジタルツインは大幅に進化し、現在は主に大手エンジニアリング会社がエンジンやタービンなどの大規模かつ高額な産業物の仮想レプリカを作成するために使用している。これにより製造業やエネルギー業などでは、製品開発やメンテナンスをはじめとする分野において大幅に生産性が向上している。
