Despite the growing enthusiasm over 5G networks in Japan, network coverage remains very limited in the country compared with other global technology leaders, such as South Korea, China, and the United States. For example, South Korea has already achieved 90% 5G population coverage since commercial service started in April 2019 and is on track to have nearly 20% of mobile users on a 5G network by the end of the year. Chinese telcos are targeting 50% population coverage by the end of the year, while in the US, Verizon has announced that its network already covers 200 million people. As seen in the exhibit below, in Japan, coverage is currently limited to only the largest cities, such as Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and a few others. The recent announcement of the iPhone 12 will increase enthusiasm for 5G in the market, but recent regulatory suggestions by the government may further inhibit the development of 5G in Japan.【抄訳】5Gネットワークに対する注目が日本において高まっているにも関わらず、サービス提供エリアは韓国、中国、米国などのテクノロジ先進国に比べてまだ非常に限られている。例えば、韓国では2019年4月に商用サービスが開始され、5Gの人口カバー率はすでに90％を達しており、2021年内にはモバイルユーザーの約20％が5Gを利用する見込みである。中国の通信事業者は2020年末までに人口の50％をカバーすることを目標としており、米国のベライゾンは自社のサービスがすでに2億人をカバーしていると発表している。一方、日本では現在、5Gの提供エリアは東京、大阪、名古屋などの大都市に限られている。先日のiPhone 12の発表を受けて市場での5Gへの期待が一層高まると見られるが、一方で、最近日本政府が携帯料金について言及したことによって、国内での5Gの普及を遅らせる可能性もある。
